Elizabeth I

1533–1603

Elizabeth I ruled England from 1558 to 1603 and established a durable Protestant settlement after years of religious upheaval. Her government confronted Catholic plots, rebellion, war in Ireland and conflict with Spain, culminating in the defeat of the Armada in 1588. Elizabeth used courtship and the possibility of marriage as diplomatic instruments but never named an heir until the succession became unavoidable. Her reign also saw major expansion in commerce, seafaring and literary culture.

Elizabeth is central to Margaret George’s Elizabeth I and appears in Ken Follett’s A Column of Fire, Philippa Gregory’s The Virgin’s Lover and numerous spy novels set around Francis Walsingham. Fiction repeatedly explores the tension between the public Virgin Queen and the private woman surrounded by favourites, councillors and threats. Portrayals vary from romantic heroine to calculating monarch, often reflecting modern debates about gender and power.

In non-fiction, Elizabeth I is discussed in Paul Doherty’s The Secret Life of Elizabeth I, Tracy Borman’s Anne Boleyn & Elizabeth I, Linda Porter’s Crown of Thistles, Gareth Russell’s A History of the English Monarchy, and Tracy Borman’s The Private Lives of the Tudors. In Paul Doherty’s The Secret Life of Elizabeth I, Paul Doherty examines claims that Elizabeth I maintained secret intimate relationships and may have concealed a pregnancy or child.
