The danger continues after Elizabeth I succeeds her half-sister. Neither Grey sister may marry without the queen’s permission, because a husband and child could create a rival Tudor line. Katherine’s secret marriage and Mary’s own attempt to choose a private life become acts with constitutional consequences. The novel follows the women from the aftermath of Jane’s failed succession through Mary’s Counter-Reformation and into an Elizabethan court determined to control every possible claimant.
