Katherine’s uncertain paternity gives private family history political consequences because any suggestion of royal blood changes how others may view her intimacy with Elizabeth. The novel therefore uses the Carey family to explore the Tudor court’s obsession with legitimacy, secrecy and proximity to the monarch. Friendship is never entirely private when the women involved stand close to a disputed succession.
