The Shardlake Series

The Shardlake Series follows Matthew Shardlake, a London barrister with scoliosis whose legal work repeatedly draws him into murder investigations and affairs of state between 1537 and 1549. He begins as an idealistic supporter of religious reform and an agent of Thomas Cromwell, but the violence of the Dissolution and the arbitrariness of Tudor government steadily erode his trust in powerful patrons. His partnerships with Mark Poer, Jack Barak and later Nicholas Overton give the investigations a personal continuity as his household and professional loyalties change.

Each novel places a distinct mystery inside a documented political crisis: the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the fall of Cromwell, Henry VIII’s northern progress, conflict between religious factions, the French attack in the Solent, Catherine Parr’s struggle for survival and Kett’s Rebellion. The series moves from Henry VIII’s final decade into the minority of Edward VI, using courts, prisons, legal institutions and ordinary households to examine how national policy affects individual lives. Shardlake’s commitment to evidence and due process repeatedly places him at odds with rulers who expect law to serve power.
