Royal Progress to the North

In the summer of 1541, Henry VIII and Queen Catherine Howard travelled north with a large royal household and armed escort. The progress carried the court through the Midlands and Yorkshire and culminated in a prolonged stay at York. It was the first visit to the region by a reigning English monarch for more than fifty years.

The journey followed the Pilgrimage of Grace and later northern conspiracies against the crown. Henry used the progress to receive submissions, hear petitions and demonstrate that royal government could reach areas where resistance to the Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries had been strongest. A proposed meeting in York with James V of Scotland did not take place.

The progress provides the historical setting for Sovereign. It supports fiction about the movement of the Tudor court, royal justice, local resentment, surveillance and the political consequences of the northern rebellions.
