Fall of Thomas Cromwell

Thomas Cromwell became Henry VIII’s principal minister and played a central role in royal supremacy, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the administrative enforcement of religious change. His authority also created powerful enemies among conservative nobles and churchmen at court.

Cromwell promoted Henry’s marriage to Anne of Cleves as part of a Protestant diplomatic alliance, but the king rejected the union and secured an annulment. Cromwell was arrested at a council meeting on 10 June 1540, accused of treason and heresy, and condemned by attainder without a conventional trial.

He was executed on 28 July 1540, the day Henry married Catherine Howard. His fall removed one of the chief architects of the Henrician Reformation but did not reverse the royal policies he had implemented. This context supports C. J.
