The Edwardian Reformation took place after Henry VIII’s death, when Edward VI came to the throne as a child. Government was controlled by powerful Protestant regents and councillors who advanced doctrinal and liturgical change. Parish worship, images, books and religious teaching were altered more radically than under Henry.
The phase mattered because it made the English Reformation more explicitly Protestant. It also created deep instability, since Edward’s death opened the way for Mary I’s Catholic restoration. The speed of change left clergy and communities navigating danger under successive regimes.
C. J. Sansom’s later Shardlake novels move through the religious tension created by Henry’s final years and Edward’s accession, while Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory use the succession crisis around Edward and his sisters. This setting supports stories about child kingship, reformers, conservative households and people trying to survive shifting doctrine.
