England, 1558. A naked body is found hanging from an oak at Hatfield House and appears to be Thomas Seymour, although the historical Seymour was executed for treason nine years earlier. John Dee, Margaretta and Dee’s pupil Christopher are ordered to investigate as a kidnapping, ransom demands and further deaths revive the dangerous scandal that had once surrounded the young Princess Elizabeth and Seymour.

The mystery unfolds in the final months of Mary I’s reign, when Elizabeth’s position as likely successor remains politically fraught. Thomas Seymour’s execution and his documented relationship with the teenage Elizabeth provide the historical backstory, while his apparent return, the murders and the central conspiracy are fictional.
