Elizabeth’s severe smallpox illness and the genuine uncertainty over the succession are historical, as are Anne of Cleves, William Cecil, Robert Dudley and John Dee. The supposed prince and his claim to be Henry VIII’s son are fictional, inspired by rumours surrounding Anne and Henry after their annulment. Williams uses the real succession panic to create a dynastic crime mystery rather than presenting the claimant as an overlooked historical heir.
