Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk

Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, was the father of Lady Jane Grey and a prominent Protestant nobleman during the reign of Edward VI. Through his wife Frances Brandon, his daughters had a claim to the Tudor succession. Grey supported John Dudley’s plan to place Jane on the throne in 1553 but was initially pardoned by Mary I. His participation in Wyatt’s rebellion the following year led to his capture and execution.

Henry Grey appears in Alison Weir’s Innocent Traitor and Philippa Gregory’s The Last Tudor. Historical fiction often portrays him as an ambitious father willing to sacrifice Jane for power, although his religious convictions and fear of a Catholic restoration also influenced his actions. The rapid shift from pardon to renewed rebellion gives novelists a clear example of political misjudgement within a family already under suspicion.
