John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland

1504–1553

John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, was a soldier and politician who became the dominant minister of Edward VI after the fall of Somerset. He ended expensive wars, stabilised finances and supported further Protestant reform, while concentrating offices among his allies.

Dudley had risen through military and naval service under Henry VIII and became one of the leading councillors of the young Edward VI. After helping overthrow the Duke of Somerset, he dominated the council, suppressed Kett’s Rebellion and pursued financial and religious policies intended to stabilise the regime. His final attempt to preserve a Protestant succession through Lady Jane Grey destroyed his position when Mary Tudor rapidly gathered wider support.

Alison Weir’s Children of England examines their contrasting personalities, family relationships and the councillors who attempted to govern through them. Edward’s Protestant regime, Northumberland’s coup, Mary’s Catholic restoration and Elizabeth’s dangerous years as heir form one connected struggle over legitimacy and belief. In Alison Weir’s Innocent Traitor, after Edward VI’s death, Northumberland and the Grey family place her on the throne despite Mary Tudor’s stronger claim. Further fictional perspectives on John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland can be found in Ann Rinaldi’s Nine Days a Queen and C. W. Gortner’s The Tudor Secret.
