Fraser follows Mary from her position as the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon through the succession crisis of 1553, her restoration of Catholic worship, her Spanish marriage and the burnings that fixed her hostile Protestant reputation. The book presents Mary’s reign as a Tudor experiment in female monarchy, religious restoration and dynastic insecurity rather than only as the story behind the later label “Bloody Mary”.
