Rosemary Sutcliff

Rosemary Sutcliff was a British author best known for historical novels set in the ancient and medieval worlds. Born in 1920, she spent much of her childhood in poor health and developed an early interest in history, legend and storytelling. Her fiction frequently explores Roman Britain, the decline of the Roman Empire and the cultures that emerged after it, often through the experiences of young protagonists caught between competing loyalties.

Sutcliff’s best-known works include The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch and The Lantern Bearers. Her novels are noted for their vivid landscapes, careful historical research and serious treatment of courage, identity and belonging. Although many of her books were written for younger readers, their emotional depth and historical detail have earned them a lasting adult readership.
