Warrior Scarlet

Bronze Age Britain. Drem is born with a disabled right arm into a community where boys prove adulthood by joining the hunters and earning the scarlet cloak of a warrior. He refuses to accept that his body excludes him, training himself with determination while also learning tasks and relationships the tribe values less publicly.

The test of the wolf hunt forces Drem to confront fear, pride and the difference between courage and conformity. His growth does not depend on becoming physically identical to other warriors, but on discovering how skill, responsibility and service can take different forms. Sutcliff reconstructs a pastoral community of the South Downs while placing disability at the centre of its social expectations and rites of passage.
