Six linked stories follow a military family through more than three centuries of Roman Britain. The Capricorn bracelet is first awarded to a centurion during the Boudican revolt and is then inherited by descendants serving in changing frontier conditions, including the construction and defence of Hadrian’s Wall.
Later generations confront mutiny, tribal war, weakening communications and the Great Conspiracy of the fourth century. Emperors and official strategies change, but each wearer must decide what military honour means in the circumstances of his own life. The collection gives a long view of Roman rule through ordinary soldiers and families, making the bracelet a material link between imperial history and private memory.
