Frontier Wolf

Late Roman Britain. After a failure of command in Germany, the young officer Alexios is sent to an isolated northern fort and given charge of the Frontier Wolves, a rough auxiliary unit accustomed to surviving beyond the comfortable reach of imperial administration. He must rebuild authority without destroying the local customs and relationships on which the garrison depends.

The fort’s peace rests on a fragile understanding with neighbouring tribes, but distant officials impose decisions that ignore frontier realities. Alexios is forced to choose between literal obedience and responsibility for soldiers and civilians who will bear the consequences. The novel treats leadership as a practical moral problem, set within an empire whose formal power is still formidable but whose border communities increasingly rely on their own negotiated order.
