Britain and Gaul, AD 383. Flavius Maximus has been declared emperor in Britain and crossed into Gaul, where the western emperor Gratian is dead. The civil war has divided officers, commands and friendships that once appeared secure.

Victorinus and Felicius are drawn into opposing loyalties as Maximus and Theodosius face one another across the empire. The novel follows the personal consequences of usurpation, asking whether military honour can survive when the lawful ruler is decided by soldiers rather than succession.
