Rosemary Sutcliff’s Roman Britain Trilogy follows three widely separated generations connected by a dolphin-engraved family ring as Roman power in Britain changes and finally disappears. The Eagle of the Ninth is set in the second-century province and sends Marcus Aquila beyond Hadrian’s Wall. The Silver Branch moves to the third-century breakaway empire of Carausius, while The Lantern Bearers begins after the withdrawal of the legions and during the expansion of Saxon settlement.

The books combine military adventure with a sustained examination of cultural allegiance. Their protagonists begin with identities defined by Rome, but Britain repeatedly becomes more than a distant posting or inherited province. Read together, the trilogy traces the transition from confident imperial frontier to contested Romano-British survival, asking what honour, family memory and civilisation mean when the political order that gave them shape can no longer endure.
