5th–6th centuries CE

After the end of Roman rule, groups conventionally identified as Angles, Saxons and Jutes settled in Britain. Some initially served as mercenaries, while later migration and warfare contributed to the formation of new regional kingdoms.

The surviving evidence combines archaeology, later chronicles and origin traditions, including stories about Hengist, Horsa and Vortigern. The process was gradual and varied by region rather than a single conquest.
