Clothar, a young Frankish nobleman dispossessed by war in Gaul, is educated in one of the few schools still preserving classical learning alongside military training. Sent to Britain by his mentor, he encounters Arthur Pendragon and recognises in the new king a political project capable of resisting the violence overtaking the western provinces.
