Uprising
In 1297, William Wallace and Robert Bruce meet amid the rebellions spreading across Scotland against Edward I. Their aims overlap but their positions are very different: Wallace can act outside the feudal order, while Bruce must weigh resistance against family claims, noble rivalries and oaths that English power can enforce.
The novel carries their struggle through the long war that follows, showing how defeat, execution and divided leadership fail to extinguish the movement for independence. As Bruce learns from Wallace’s methods and Scotland’s surviving commanders rebuild their forces, the conflict moves towards the disciplined campaign that will eventually confront Edward II at Bannockburn.
