Battle of Stirling Bridge
1297 CE
The Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in 1297 when Scottish forces used the crossing of the River Forth to defeat an English army. The narrow bridge and terrain helped neutralise English numbers and cavalry. The victory made Wallace and Moray major figures in the resistance to English rule.
The battle matters because it demonstrated that English military power could be defeated by careful use of ground and timing. It gave the Scottish cause momentum and symbolic force. Moray’s death and Wallace’s later career also show the personal costs of resistance.
Stirling Bridge appears in fiction about William Wallace and the early independence struggle, including Nigel Tranter-style Scottish historical novels.
