Battle of Bannockburn
1314 CE
The Battle of Bannockburn was fought in 1314 near Stirling. Robert the Bruce’s army defeated a larger English force under Edward II through disciplined positioning, strong use of schiltrons, and poor English coordination. The victory became the most famous battlefield success of the Scottish independence struggle.
Bannockburn matters because it strengthened Bruce’s kingship and made English domination of Scotland much harder to sustain. It was not the final legal settlement of independence, but it was a major military and symbolic turning point. The battle became central to Scottish national memory.
