Penguin Monarchs

Penguin Monarchs is a sequence of concise biographies of the rulers of England and Britain, from the formation of the English kingdom under the later Anglo-Saxons to the modern constitutional monarchy. Written by specialist historians, the volumes examine kingship and queenship through political decisions, dynastic pressures, war, religion, court culture and the changing institutions of government.

Read together, the books trace the monarchy’s development from personal lordship and conquest to parliamentary government, imperial kingship and public service. The series includes disputed and joint sovereigns, Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector, and forthcoming studies intended to close remaining gaps in the succession.
