Elizabeth II

1926–2022

Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom and numerous Commonwealth realms from 1952 until her death in 2022. She became heir after the abdication of Edward VIII and ascended the throne during a period of post-war reconstruction and rapid imperial change.

Across a seventy-year reign she maintained strict constitutional neutrality while adapting royal ceremony and communication to television, global travel and intense public scrutiny. Her longevity made her a symbol of continuity through decolonisation, political change and repeated transformations of British society.
