It explains how a young princess became sovereign, how the early reign adapted to post-war Britain and how royal duty shaped her marriage, family life and public conduct.
Brandreth continues through seven decades of political and social change, considering the Queen’s relationships with ministers, relatives, the Commonwealth and the public. Based partly on his own encounters with the royal family, the biography concentrates on her private character, humour and working habits as well as the crises and ceremonies of the reign, ending with her death in 2022.
