James Clavell

James Clavell was born in Sydney in 1921 and grew up in a British naval family. During the Second World War he served with the Royal Artillery and was captured by Japanese forces in Java. He spent years as a prisoner of war, including time in Changi, an experience that later informed his novel King Rat. After the war he entered the film industry, working as a screenwriter, director and producer on projects including The Fly, The Great Escape and To Sir, with Love.

Clavell’s historical reputation rests on the interconnected novels often called the Asian Saga. Shōgun follows an English pilot drawn into Japanese politics around 1600; Tai-Pan depicts the founding of British Hong Kong; and Noble House carries the commercial rivalry into the twentieth century. Other novels explore prisoner-of-war survival, revolution and political conflict across Asia. Clavell’s books are expansive, plot-driven studies of negotiation between cultures, with trade, language and personal allegiance repeatedly determining who gains power. He died in 1994. His work remains influential, although modern readers may also examine how its cultural perspectives reflect the period in which it was written.
