Anglo-Satsuma War

After negotiations over the Namamugi Incident failed, a British squadron entered Kagoshima Bay in August 1863 and seized Satsuma ships. Coastal batteries opened fire, and British warships bombarded Kagoshima during the resulting battle.

Neither side achieved a simple political victory, but the conflict demonstrated Western naval power and encouraged Satsuma leaders to pursue military modernisation. Satsuma later became a major force in the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Gai-Jin develops towards this confrontation through its fictional merchant, diplomatic and samurai factions. The war provides the military consequence of the novel’s opening attack and its wider struggle over foreign influence.
