James A. Michener

James A. Michener was an American author best known for expansive historical novels that trace the development of countries, regions and communities across long periods of time. Born in 1907, he served in the United States Navy during the Second World War, an experience that inspired his first book, Tales of the South Pacific. The collection won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and later became the basis for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

Michener went on to write major novels including Hawaii, Centennial, Chesapeake, Poland and The Source. His books combine fictional families and characters with political, cultural and geographical history, often spanning several centuries. Known for extensive research and broad narrative scope, he became one of the most widely read American historical novelists of the twentieth century.
