Indian Wars of the American West
1850–1890 CE
The Indian Wars of the American West were a series of conflicts between the United States and Indigenous nations across the Plains, Southwest, Pacific Northwest and other regions. They grew from settler expansion, broken treaties, resource pressure, military campaigns and resistance to dispossession. The wars included massacres, forced removals, reservations and cultural destruction.
They matter because the Old West cannot be understood without Indigenous sovereignty, resistance and survival. The conflicts challenge romantic frontier narratives and expose the violence behind expansion.
