Callaghen

by Louis L’Amour

First published 1972

4.2(1,996)

Callaghen is a private in the United States Cavalry serving in the Mojave Desert, poorly paid and already considering the end of his army career. After he saves his patrol during a dangerous encounter, he learns of a treasure map said to lead to gold hidden near an underground river, drawing him into a pursuit in which greed quickly becomes as dangerous as the desert itself.

The novel combines a military-frontier setting with a treasure hunt across country where water, distance and local knowledge determine survival. Callaghen’s experience as a soldier gives him an advantage, but the promise of wealth attracts rivals willing to kill for it, forcing him to choose between escape, duty and the chance of a very different future.
