Nathaniel Philbrick is an American historian and author whose narrative nonfiction focuses particularly on maritime history, exploration and the formative conflicts of the United States. Raised in Pittsburgh, he studied English at Brown University and American literature at Duke University before settling on Nantucket, whose seafaring past became central to his early writing. His breakthrough book, In the Heart of the Sea, reconstructs the 1820 destruction of the whaleship Essex and the crew’s struggle for survival; it won the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction and was later adapted for film. Philbrick combines extensive archival research with vivid characterisation and a strong sense of place, presenting historical events with the momentum of adventure fiction.
Philbrick’s books cover several major episodes in American history. Mayflower examines Plymouth Colony, relations between English settlers and Indigenous peoples, and the violence of King Philip’s War, while Sea of Glory recounts the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842. The Last Stand revisits George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. His American Revolution trilogy—Bunker Hill, Valiant Ambition and In the Hurricane’s Eye—traces the conflict from the siege of Boston through Benedict Arnold’s betrayal to the victory at Yorktown. In Travels with George, Philbrick retraces George Washington’s presidential journeys through the new republic. His works are narrative history rather than historical novels, but their close attention to individual experience makes them especially accessible to readers of historical fiction.
