Bunker Hill

Boston, 1773–1776. Nathaniel Philbrick begins with the Boston Tea Party and the punitive British response that placed Massachusetts under military pressure. Samuel Adams and other Patriot organisers struggle to turn resistance into coordinated action, while General Thomas Gage tries to restore royal authority without provoking a wider rebellion. The fighting at Lexington and Concord destroys that possibility and leaves British troops surrounded inside Boston by a rapidly assembled provincial army.

The narrative culminates on 17 June 1775, when inexperienced New England soldiers defend improvised works on Breed’s Hill against repeated British assaults. Joseph Warren, William Howe, Paul Revere and George Washington emerge as complicated participants rather than fixed patriotic symbols. By following civilians, soldiers and political leaders on both sides through the siege and British evacuation, Philbrick presents the Revolution’s opening as a chaotic civil conflict shaped by fear, ambition, miscalculation and remarkable endurance.
