War
1955–1975 CE
The Vietnam War grew from decolonisation, Vietnamese nationalism and Cold War containment. North Vietnam and communist forces fought South Vietnam and the United States in a conflict involving guerrilla warfare, bombing, jungle combat and political crisis. The war ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975.
It mattered because it transformed American politics, military confidence and global perceptions of Cold War intervention. It also devastated Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and left deep cultural memories of protest, trauma and displacement. Fiction by Tim O’Brien, Graham Greene, Denis Johnson and many others uses Vietnam for moral ambiguity, memory and the breakdown of official narratives.
Cold War fiction is dominated by espionage and divided loyalties, with John le Carré, Len Deighton, Robert Littell, Charles Cumming and Joseph Kanon providing obvious author and series connections. The period also supports novels about Berlin, nuclear fear, proxy wars, defectors, surveillance and life behind the Iron Curtain. These pages can connect spy series with literary fiction about ideology, betrayal, exile and the long shadow of World War II.
