Doris Kearns Goodwin is an American historian and biographer best known for narrative studies of United States presidents, political leadership and national crises. After working as a White House fellow during Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration, she drew upon interviews with the former president for Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream. Her later books include The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, The Bully Pulpit, Leadership in Turbulent Times and Team of Rivals, an account of Abraham Lincoln and the former political opponents he brought into his cabinet during the American Civil War.
Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize for History for No Ordinary Time, which examines Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and life on the American home front during the Second World War. Her work combines political biography with detailed accounts of family relationships, personal ambition, public opinion and the exercise of presidential power. In An Unfinished Love Story, she uses the papers of her late husband, presidential speechwriter Richard Goodwin, to create a personal history of the 1960s involving John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
