Militaria: Volume Four

Militaria: Volume Four ranges from the destruction of Melos in the Peloponnesian War to Australian armoured warfare in Vietnam. Its early essays reconsider Athenian power, medieval military change, the Crown’s control of saltpetre and the careers of soldiers associated with the American Revolutionary era and nineteenth-century imperial service.

The modern contributions examine a possible turning point in the American Civil War, Irish neutrality during the Second World War, the British occupation of Iceland, the German V-weapon programme and Australian Centurion tanks in Vietnam. The collection treats military history broadly, linking operations and technology to law, diplomacy, neutrality, social structure and the long afterlife of weapons systems.
