Militaria: Volume Three

The third Militaria anthology opens with the Battle of Dettingen and the career of the Spanish guerrilla leader Francisco Espoz y Mina before turning to the machinery of British defence policy in the nineteenth century. Other essays investigate German dye chemistry and industrialised killing, the development of military medicine and the internment of British sailors in the Netherlands during the First World War.

The Second World War contributions examine Lieutenant-General William Gott in North Africa and West African troops serving in Burma. The final studies assess the British Commonwealth occupation of Japan and the persistent difficulty of military procurement. Together they connect battlefield command with science, medicine, administration, colonial manpower and the political problems that continue after fighting ends.
