In the aftermath of the Zulu campaign, George Hart is recruited by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli for a secret mission in Afghanistan. His mixed Irish and Zulu ancestry allows him to travel with less scrutiny than a conventional British officer, but the assignment places him inside the political violence of the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the rivalry over British influence on the north-west frontier.

Hart is ordered to seize the Prophet’s Cloak before it can become a symbol of revolt. His flight across Afghanistan with a royal woman forces him to question the intelligence behind the operation and the assumption that imperial necessity overrides local lives. Espionage, pursuit and romance turn the mission into a conflict between obedience to Britain and loyalty to his own conscience.
