Farewell to Afghanistan
First published 2021
Afghanistan, 1880. Major Jack Windrush of the 113th Foot is sent to persuade Batoor Khan to support the new Amir, but the mission is overtaken by Ayub Khan’s advance against British forces. Jack joins the army moving to meet the threat and is soon caught in a campaign of major battles, raids and political uncertainty.
Family feuds, an enigmatic woman and the mysterious Timuri complicate his military duties, while the British position deteriorates after defeat at Maiwand. Jack’s survival ultimately becomes tied to the famous march from Kabul to Kandahar and the battle that follows. The novel presents the final phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War through the mixture of diplomacy, logistics and hard campaigning faced by officers and ordinary soldiers.
