Orphaned during the rebellion of 1857, Ashton Pelham-Martyn is raised as Ashok by his Indian foster mother and grows up in a princely state beside the neglected Princess Anjuli. Reclaimed by his British relatives and educated in England, Ash returns to India as an officer divided between the culture of his birth and the life that formed him.
His attempt to rescue Anjuli from a dynastic marriage and threatened sati leads into frontier intelligence work and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The final section incorporates the historical Kabul mission of Sir Louis Cavagnari and Walter Hamilton and the destruction of the British Residency in September 1879.
