In 1859 Boston heiress Hero Athena Hollis travels to Zanzibar to join her uncle, the American consul, determined to oppose the island's slave trade. Her moral certainty is challenged by Rory Frost, a renegade seafarer whose knowledge of the coast, commerce and local power makes him both an enemy and an indispensable ally.
Their conflict unfolds amid cholera, piracy, smuggling and the real attempt by Barghash bin Said to overthrow his half-brother Sultan Majid. Hero's reforming ideals collide with the political and economic systems sustaining Zanzibar, while her attraction to Rory forces her to reconsider the difference between declared virtue and effective action.
