Winter de Ballesteros returns to India to marry Conway Barton, the British Commissioner of Lunjore, unaware that the charming man she remembers has become corrupt and self-indulgent. His assistant, Captain Alex Randall, recognises the growing danger in the Bengal Army and the threat that Barton's household poses to Winter.
When the rebellion of 1857 erupts, colonial society collapses into massacre, siege and flight. Alex and Winter cross hostile territory together while confronting the policies and personal failures that helped create the uprising. The original 1957 novel was restored and substantially revised for its 1979 republication.
