British Raj
1858–1947 CE
The British Raj began in 1858 after the Indian Rebellion and lasted until independence and partition in 1947. It involved Crown administration, princely states, railways, army service, racial hierarchy, famine, reform, nationalism and imperial ceremony. British rule was both bureaucratic and deeply personal in its effects on Indian society.
It mattered because the Raj shaped modern South Asia and British imperial identity. Its history includes collaboration, resistance, intimacy, exploitation and eventual nationalist mobilisation. M. M.
