Lawrence James is a British historian and author whose work concentrates on the British Empire, military history and the development of Britain’s ruling institutions. Born in Bath, he studied history and English at the University of York before undertaking postgraduate research at Merton College, Oxford. After working as a teacher, he became a full-time writer in 1985 and established a reputation for broad narrative histories that combine political and military events with contemporary testimony and social analysis.
James’s major books include The Rise and Fall of the British Empire, Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India, Warrior Race, Aristocrats, Churchill and Empire and Empires in the Sun. He has also written military biographies of the Duke of Wellington, T. E. Lawrence and Field Marshal Edmund Allenby, alongside studies of the Crimean War, imperial campaigns in Africa, military mutinies and Britain’s relationship with China. His books examine conquest, warfare and imperial administration while also considering class, national identity and the political and cultural legacy of British power.
