Mahdist War
1881–1899
The Mahdist War began with Muhammad Ahmad’s movement against Egyptian rule in Sudan and expanded into a major imperial crisis. The fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon became defining events in British memory.
British and Egyptian forces later returned under Kitchener, using railways, river transport, modern firepower and disciplined formations. The campaign culminated in the defeat of the Mahdist state.
