Sudan, 1884. Khartoum is surrounded by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi, as General Charles Gordon attempts to hold the city for the Egyptian government. Penrod Ballantyne, trader Ryder Courtney and the Benbrook family are among those trapped inside. The siege is grounded in the Mahdist uprising and General Gordon’s controversial defence of Khartoum, where imperial strategy, religious revolution and civilian survival intersect.

As food, ammunition and hope of relief diminish, rival personalities and private loyalties shape preparations for the assault. The novel places its fictional families within the Mahdist War and the final months of Gordon’s defence of Khartoum. By bringing Courtneys and Ballantynes together inside the encircled city, the novel turns a documented military disaster into the origin of new family alliances and enmities.
