The Indian Ocean at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Hal Courtney accepts a royal commission to suppress pirates attacking East India Company shipping and takes his sons on a voyage towards Madagascar and the Arabian coast. The mission unfolds when the English East India Company depended upon armed merchant shipping and when piracy overlapped with the rival ambitions of European, Arab and African coastal powers.

The expedition divides the brothers through captivity, ambition and different cultural allegiances. Sea battles and coastal warfare unfold against the pirate networks and trading routes connecting southern Africa, Arabia and India. The Courtney sons respond differently to captivity and cultural contact, creating family divisions that will shape later settlements at the Cape and in India.
