Muhammad Ahmad
1844–1885
Muhammad Ahmad declared himself the Mahdi in Sudan in 1881 and led a major revolt against Egyptian and British-backed rule. His movement captured Khartoum in 1885 and created a state that reshaped the politics of the Nile valley.
In Wilbur Smith’s The Triumph of the Sun, Khartoum is surrounded by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi, as General Charles Gordon attempts to hold the city for the Egyptian government.
