Siege of Khartoum
1884–1885
Khartoum was isolated by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad during the Mahdist uprising. General Charles Gordon organised its defence while civilians, Egyptian troops and officials waited for relief from Britain.
River transport, food shortages and political delay shaped the siege. A British relief expedition reached the Nile too late, and Mahdist forces entered the city on 26 January 1885.
