Shangani Patrol

The Shangani Patrol was a detachment of British South Africa Company troops sent in pursuit of King Lobengula late in the First Matabele War. Major Allan Wilson crossed the rain-swollen Shangani River with a small mounted force in December 1893 and became separated from the main column.

Ndebele warriors surrounded the isolated patrol on 4 December. Wilson’s men were killed after a prolonged defence, and the episode was rapidly transformed by settler culture into a heroic ‘last stand’. Its mythology obscured the wider context of company conquest and the destruction of Ndebele sovereignty.

The doomed patrol gives John Wilcox’s The Shangani Patrol its title and climax, bringing Fonthill and Jenkins into one of the most remembered episodes of the 1893 invasion of Matabeleland.
